What is biometrics?
Biometrics is the study for the unique recognition of individuals based on one or more traits, whether physical or even behavioral. The Biometric Expert is the technical professional responsible for the creation of the biometric identification system, from the collection of biometric data, through its processing and storage. They will know which type of biometric identification will be most suitable for use in various scenarios and on different devices, always aiming to provide maximum protection and security. They must have a global vision of the security system to understand where biometrics fits in, as well as its functions and how it should interact with other elements. They will be up to date with technological advances in the field of surveillance and security, in order to apply them to their work whenever necessary.
Why do we know this job has a future?
According to data from Global Industry Analysts, the biometric systems market will grow from $24 billion in 2020 to $83 billion in 2027, with an annual growth rate of almost 20%. Nowadays, multiple Asian countries use facial recognition to access their office buildings or homes, where in many cases traditional locks have been replaced by a fingerprint reader. Since September 2019, the city of Madrid has a pioneering initiative in Europe, through which a pilot project is being carried out to allow bus users to pay through facial recognition, without the need to carry a card or cash. Currently, cloud-based biometric technology is the latest innovation for secure authentication that offers all the advantages of biometric technology while increasing security and preventing identity theft. Biometric information is not transmitted or stored on a centralized server, but rather stored in a cloud that authenticates credentials and then only shares the authentication status with a device. Currently, BioID, ImageWare Systems, and IriTech are some of the leading companies focused on this development. Experts see endless possibilities for biometric technology, so in the coming years, we may see state-level projects where documents such as ID cards or passports are replaced by this technology.
